Muji’s newest hut (coming in August): a tiny garden getaway with a covered porch, with a blackened facade sided in burnt cedar. Price: $27,000.
Above: The prefab Muji Hut is small with an interior footprint of 98 square feet, “but the porch and the high shed roof create a space large enough for 3–4 people to relax in,” notes Muji. “The large window at the entrance was originally made to be a shop’s sliding door. Light and wind visit through another smaller window.”
So far Muji has plans to ship the huts only within Japan.
Above: From the back, the black Muji Hut has a simple profile. The charred siding is blackened by a traditional shou sugi ban technique. Above: Plywood interior walls “are left untreated so you can design the interior any way you like,” says Muji. Twin beds welcome. Or at least one twin bed. Above: Suitable for use as a potting shed, garden workshop, or backyard getaway, the mini Muji Shed does not have a toilet, sink, or cooking facilities.
