A Room of One’s Own: Build This Backyard Studio (Sold on Amazon) in Just 8 Hours

May 15, 2019

In the department of “What CAN’T You Buy on Amazon?”: With the click of a button and for as little as $3,000, you can can order a kit to build a one-room guest cottage in your backyard. (Just please don’t call it a “she shed.” Can we all agree that the term is terrible?)

Amazon has been quietly offering these DIY kits for some years now. Last week, though, the Internet went mad for this modern garden house, by Allwood, sold on the site. The company claims you can build this 172-square-foot cabin, made of Nordic wood, in just 8 hours with only two people. That’s shorter than the the time it takes to assemble certain Lego sets.

Take a look and tell us: Would you buy this? And what would you use it for? Guest house? Home office? Garden shed?

All the materials are included in Allwood&#8\2\17;s Solvalla Studio Cabin Kit, except for the foundation and roof shingles. The cabin doesn&#8\2\17;t come insulated or electrically wired, but you can add those features with the help of a contractor. It&#8\2\17;s priced at \$7,\250; shipping is free.

We found a few other tiny homes by Allwood that we like as well, including the Arlanda XXL Garden House Kit. At \273 square feet, it&#8\2\17;s larger than the Solvalla. (Many of Allwood&#8\2\17;s product names are Scandi-inspired, perhaps as a nod to the company&#8\2\17;s Finnish founder.) The Arlanda is \$\10,695.00.

The Sommersby Garden House Kit is \174-square-feet; \$8,360.
