Urban Gardener: A Greenhouse for Your Balcony

April 2, 2013

We’ve made no secret of our obsession with Finnish company Kekkilä’s compact lean-to greenhouse, perfect for an urban balcony. There’s something about the glass crank-open roof and the adjustable shelves that just makes us want to play with it. Now we’ve spotted a green-painted version, via Manufactum, and we’re wondering: what will it take to get this imported to the US? We’re willing to mule in the shelves in suitcases if that will help:

Above: A Glass and Pinewood Balcony Greenhouse is made of varnished pine and single-pane safety glass. It is 1,054€ from Manufactum.

A white-painted version of Kekkilä’s Odlingsvitrin (which the company translates as “Green Vitrine”) is available through its Hasselfors Garden line for home gardeners. It is 6990 SEK (or roughly $1,074 US); to order, go to Hasselsfors Garden.

Above: The greenhouse has a rust-resistant heavy duty steel latch.

What are you going to grow in there? For ideas, see Required Reading: The Edible Balcony.

Above: A ventilation flap is built into the roof of the greenhouse which functions with an automatic opener: when the inside temperature increases, the pane raises itself automatically; when the temperature sinks, it closes again.

Above: The greenhouse comes with three adjustable steel grid shelves.

For another lean to conservatory, see Urban Gardener: A sliver of a Greenhouse for a Small Space.
