April 17, 2026

Like your gardens neat—and wild, too? Have an affinity for modern design but also for warm patina? Want your privacy but don’t like to feel confined? If like us, you are a jumble of contradictions when it comes to landscape design, here’s a project that seems tailor-made for those who want it all.

We spotted the lush shade garden in Highgate, North London, on landscape designer Alexandra Noble’s website and immediately reached out for all the details of how she created the enviable outdoor space. Read on to learn her secrets.

Below, Alexandra walks us through the elements of this stunning space—and shares how to get a similar look for your own backyard.

The Furniture

Alexandra relied on Hay for all the outdoor furniture. The cafe table and chairs, in Rust Red, are from Hay&#8\2\17;s Pallisade Collection—as are the lounge chairs on the deck and the bench next to the stairs.

The Fence

Instead of a picket fence or wall, Alexandra opted for square trellis panels that make the small garden feel more expansive. She sourced them from The Garden Trellis Co.

The Planters

The rounded Cor-ten raised beds were custom-made. For similar planters, consider Plantercraft&#8\2\17;s Corten Steel Round Planters, which come in a range of sizes. For a rectangular shape, try the Corten Steel Series Long Box Planter from AllModern.

The Plants

Above: Native hedges were planted on two sides of the yard; a mix of perennials in the raised beds were chosen to provide successive blooming. Tulipa ‘Black Parrot’ (left) and  Tulipa ‘Artist’ both flower late spring.

The Lighting

The cast aluminum Warrior Wall Light, in an antique copper finish, is by Franklite.
