Landscape Designer: Arne Maynard Photography via @arnemaynardgardendesign except where noted.

The most generous gardener we know is British landscape designer Arne Maynard. He keeps a diary and shares intimate snapshots of his Wales garden via his Instagram feed @arnemaynardgardendesign and online garden journal (where many of the photos are shot by the talented Britt Willoughby Dyer). The result? A look at a year in the life of Allt-y-Bela, a very special garden:

Autumn

A hedge of pleached crabapple trees grows near the house.

In the kitchen garden, Maynard has a mix of edible and ornamental plants.

Pots of Primula auricula will spend winter on shelves sheltered from the weather.

Heavy autumn rain showers soak the grounds.

The kitchen garden, prepped for an organic gardening course that Maynard leads.

The first frost, on December 1.

In winter, the structure of the kitchen garden is revealed.

Winter

Smoke plumes rise from the chimneys in mid-January.

An afternoon flurry dusts the gardens with snow.

Hazel branches collected from nearby hedgerows are shaped into sturdy domes to support roses.

Maynard begins chitting seed potatoes in late February.

A clear sunrise, bringing with it the promise of spring.

Spring's telltale sign: the arrival of snowdrops.
