Description from Make A Basket
Your own personal cake of beeswax! Essential for use in many crafts, particularly sewing ones. Basketmakers who coil use beeswax to wax thread to ease the drag of the binder through the coil. This keeps your thread from fraying, and makes the basket look nicer. Any thread, even if it is already waxed, will benefit from a drag across this beeswax cake!
The great thing about beeswax is not only it’s great natural sweet smell, but that it has a low melting point. If you draw your thread across it, and then run your fingers down the waxed thread, the heat from your body and the friction of the drag will actually help melt the wax into the thread. As you stitch, little deposits of wax are made on the basket, easing the passage of the thread. When you are finished weaving, shoot the basket with a warm hairdryer, and melt all the teeny tiny bits of wax. This makes the basket stronger, and gives it a light sheen that is very becoming (in addition to making it smell even more wonderful than it did before!)
