Description from Twisted Trunk
Philodendron tortum is another very unique and rare philodendron that grows in the indigenous forests of Brazil. I have to say it is overlooked on many people’s wish list but trust me when I say you would be remiss if you passed on having a P. tortum in your collection. Lucky for you, we are growing these cutie beauties in our nursery and have only a select handful ready to sell. They are a beautiful dark green epiphyte that has an exquisite leaf that sets it apart from other aroids. The pinnate shaped leaves tend to twist as it grows creating a super cool sculptural effect. The leaf structure has a “fern” like branching effect which allows them to live in a brighter light than other large leaf aroids that may burn from direct sun.
Like all aroids, P. tortum grows in warm high humidity, moist soil and bright light. We currently have them growing in part sun/part shade as understory plants under palm canopy. If you intend on growing it as a houseplant you will usually need some sort of pole or branch to grow on. Since in their indigenous environment you would see them either sprawling on the forest floor or clambering up a tree or palm trunk. Philodendrons are great climbers and can attach themselves to grow on a wall and tree/palm trunk for a spectacular display. They can also grow along the ground if growing in the landscape looking for something to cling to. FYI this is not philodendron polypodiodies which looks similar but a true philodendron tortum species.
Though be aware for all you pet owners and parents to check whether any plant has poisonous elements to it before introducing it as a house plant. The philodendron family is considered poisonous if parts of the actual plant are ingested. Here is a link for your concerns on the symptoms and treatment for philodendrons because we are animal lovers and parents as well.
Our philodendron tortum is sold in a 6-inch pot and they are about 24-36 inches depending on where you measure. They are huge, thick stalks and completely out grown the pots, rambling about!
