Beach City

My clients in swanky Manhattan Beach had outgrown their old pool and the space no longer functioned for their needs. We created multiple “rooms” for relaxing and entertaining. A heater over the dining table in the pergola keeps diners toasty, the outdoor kitchen counter doubling as a buffet. At the other end of the pergola, the custom fire table and bench are wonderful for the cool evenings. A swing bench is a favorite place to unwind and the roomy stone patio can even double as a dance floor. It’s all surrounded by a lush garden with a plant palette that is easy care and drought tolerant while lowering their water and energy needs significantly.

Canyon View Terrace

My clients were busy healthcare professionals and needed a place to relax, entertain and wash away the day’s stress. The existing forlorn concrete patio didn’t do justice to the spectacular view. We created two levels of patios, an upper paved patio off the house and a lower deck below in the canyon. The capacious upper deck features a Jacuzzi with a custom-built pergola, a dining area, and a bespoke bench and fire pit. Raised planter beds break up the expanse of bluestone paving and create intimate areas while still allowing plenty of room for hosting parties and get-togethers. The lower deck and hillside are planted with California native plants, creating a veritable wildlife sanctuary.

Modern Hilltop Retreat

This gorgeous garden was once the poster child for deferred maintenance. A dilapidated wooden fence blocked the beautiful views and the paving was cracked and dated. Instead, I designed a fence that would showcase the scenery as well as provide safety and security with sleek bluestone paving to visually extend the space. The result is a graphic and modern landscape complete with jacuzzi and deck, sleek barbecue and many graphic elements. Corten steel is used throughout the garden as a foil to the rich wood and cool stone. The garden is low maintenance and drought tolerant – full of amazing color and texture.

Mountain Vista

The expansive view made the patio feel open and exposed. My intent was to create a cozy space with ample casual seating where my clients could warm themselves by a fire while enjoying the breathtaking setting. I designed a bespoke concrete bench that curves gracefully around the space and connects with the outdoor kitchen. A large custom fire bowl nestles in the circular part of the bench, where the seating material switches from concrete to wood slats. Graphic black and white encaustic tile on the outdoor kitchen backsplash create a sophisticated focal point. A stand-alone curvy bench placed in the grass creates extra seating.

Native Plant Oasis

My clients wanted a California native plant garden with abundant color and low water requirements. We created a seating and patio area with gravel and boulders to mimic a natural dry stream bed with a screen of taller plants placed in the front of the area for privacy. Color and texture are carefully balanced in this exuberant garden to create harmony with flowers blooming in succession. The garden blooms with an exuberant abandon rarely seen in front yards. Sitting in this Zen-like space, amidst a sea of native flora, you can almost imagine yourself in a nature reserve far from the stresses of city life.

Natural Stone Garden

The original garden was dominated by a large circa 1940s pool surrounded by dreary concrete paving. It was transformed into a calming oasis with rich red flagstone, an inviting bench and drought tolerant plants. The flagstone imparts warmth to the space that was previously lacking and makes the once-drab pool sparkle. To stay as green as possible, the old concrete was reused to create the circular bench and retaining walls. A stately Olive tree and Caribbean Copper plants envelop the main seating area and keep it shady and cool. The garden is optimized for outdoor living and entertaining with several different outdoor rooms and uses best sustainable practices.

Sophisticated Mid-City

The stylish interiors of this home weren’t reflected in the outside spaces. A short stucco wall with electric gate was built in the front yard to create a degree of privacy and curb appeal. A striking urn became the focal point in a formal geometric arrangement with pavers set in a random pattern in decomposed granite.In the back, a generously sized deck and pergola with a decorative screen create shade and privacy while asymmetrical steps add a little playfulness. A constrained color palette of black, white and gray is sophisticated but the colorful drought-tolerant plant palette softens the look. A sleek fire pit creates another tranquil destination in the backyard.

Stylish Echo PArk

My clients were young and stylish with sophisticated design sensibilities. They wanted to add personality and functionality to their newly built house as well as a large pool and jacuzzi. To match the ultra-modern house style, we used a black pebble-tech finish to the pool with handmade black accent tile and a black under-coping pool cover to conserve water. In the back, a courtyard is created with four pomegranate trees bordering asymmetrical concrete pavers. A bespoke carved granite bowl creates a water feature that the two resident dogs can drink from. A dramatic installation of Corten Planters in the narrow side yard creates a focal point from the living rooms windows.

Rustic Urban Farm

Although my client was an avid vegetable gardener, his backyard was neglected and unused. The top elevation sported a black top and the retaining walls were disintegrating. We constructed a dining pavilion at the top with a unique pergola. Five enormous Corten vegetable beds house a cornucopia of vegetables and the many fruit trees, berries and grape vines have made this garden a food grower’s haven. A natural water features starts at the top level and meanders down to a pond below. Giant boulders with log seating form a rustic fire pit. The custom fence and gorgeous stone walls add to the bucolic ambience.

Vibrant Front Yard

The front yard of this classic Spanish Colonial home badly needed an update. Taking my cue from the home’s architecture, I used a classic quatrefoil planter centered on a grid of concrete pavers to create a classic Mediterranean courtyard. An informal low hedge of Germander creates a sense of enclosure. I anchored the two front corners with a colorful Crape Myrtle and a burgundy Caribbean Copper Plant. Color and texture are carefully balanced while the DG floor keeps it from being chaotic. The result is an exuberant garden filled to the brim with flowers and textures which are a hardy and drought tolerant mixture of California Native and Mediterranean plants.

Waterwise Mediterranean

My clients wanted to get rid of the thirsty and not-so-attractive lawn in their front yard and the backyard was dominated by a pool and jacuzzi that they no longer used. Now, flagstone paths meander from the sidewalk and driveway and lead to a small patio with a beautiful aqua fountain. In the back, a circular patio and Mediterranean fountain anchor the plant beds that are filled with a copious collection of drought tolerant plants mixed in with edible fruit and vegetables. Despite its low water requirements, the garden is lush and colorful and has been transformed into a peaceful oasis in the middle of the busy city.
