Studio Bartleby is multi-disciplinary design studio, engaged in interiors, furniture, textiles, and leather goods.

We are primarily concerned with making spaces and objects that respond to context.  We make spaces and objects to address the needs of work, engage in a relationship to the body, and respond to notions of desire, economy, and power.  With a strict set of design principals, we try to integrate our concept of effective design with our clients’ desires.  In every project, we advocate for good work over trends; making over shopping; local business over anonymous business. We prefer to connect budget, material, and labour, to produce objects and environments of true value. We prefer to embrace how our clients wish to use their private space, from how it looks during a grand party, to how it feels when fixing toast for one. Ultimately, we aim to translate that sense of pleasure derived from a perfect fit and nice thing.

Originally from Malaysia, principal designer, Mary L Chan studied English Literature at Edinburgh University and Vassar College prior to receiving her interior design degree from Parsons. She has been on the teaching faculty of Parsons and The New York School of Interior Design, as well as a guest critic at the Pratt Institute.

In 2015, we launched Bartleby Objects, a personal accessories and homegoods collection.  While our product design efforts increase, Studio Bartleby is in semi-hiatus, but we always happy to discuss potential commissions for interiors and furniture projects.
