Banish the Bugs: New Solutions for Outdoor Entertaining

July 30, 2012

No room for torches or tired of citronella candles? Here are two solutions to keep unwanted flying insects from crashing your outdoor festivities.

N.B.: Note that many citronella candles on the market are not made with actual bug-repelling citronella oil, rather with a citronella-like scent that may smell nice but is ineffective.

What are your favorite bug repelling tactics?

Above: From New York City Flower Market-based Madison and James, the citrusy Flyaway Sticks burn for four hours and keep bugs at bay. Made of wood and orange oil, the 19-inch long sticks are available in a package of 30 for $30 at Terrain. Consider standing them in small terra cotta pots filled with sand.

Above: The hand-stamped eco-friendly paper packaging puts the Flyaway Sticks into summer hostess gift territory.

Above: CB2’s kiln-fired Terracotta Oil Lamps light up with citronella or mineral oil (there is a removable oil canister for easy filling); $9.95 and $14.95 depending on size. Citronella oil is non-toxic and an effective natural bug repellent. You can find Citronella Lamp Oil through Amazon; $9.95 for a 32-ounce bottle.
